June 28, 2009 ~ Thanks For The Birthday!

Have you seen the American Cancer Society’s new ad campaign “More Birthdays?”  I just LOVE those ads and they always make me happy when I see them.  In case you haven’t seen one of them, here’s one for you to watch:

More Birthdays, courtesy of YouTube:

Pretty great, huh?  Except they don’t tell the full story – not by a long shot.  See, I will always be grateful for all the American Cancer Society has done for cancer patients like me, always be filled with thankfulness to the doctors and researchers, to the patients who participated in clinical studies, to those dedicated to raising money for the cause, and to the many, many others who have brought cancer treatment so far.  But the birthday I celebrated today was not courtesy of any of them – it was the magnificent gift given to me from my Heavenly Father.

Like a lot of other women, in years past I have joked that I didn’t want to celebrate any more birthdays (as if most of us don’t truly look our age anyhow.)  I’ve repeated the old joke that “birthdays are great, but too many of ‘em will kill ya!”  Funny how a diagnosis like mine will change all of that.  Now, I celebrate each one and savour the precious gift of time that only God can give.

Today was a treasure.  Another year mercifully given to me from the hand of my creator.  Three hundred and sixty five days where I’ve known the love of family and the warmth of friends, the blessing of knowing the love of Christ and the joy of sharing that love with someone else.  What a truly priceless gift!
