May 24, 2009 ~ A Perfectly Lovely Day

Our oldest son, John, was conferred his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree yesterday afternoon. Pretty snazzy, huh? Yeah, we think so too.
He’s been in law school for three years, and for three years we have seen less of him than ever before - the concentration of study has been incredible! Now comes the even greater task of studying for the bar exam in July, which has already begun, and we are sure to see less of him than a magic unicorn while he sets his sights on completing his goal.
But yesterday! Yesterday was a perfectly lovely day to celebrate his great achievement. First of all, I felt good – really good, when I woke up early. Then, John and I went out for a yummy, old-fashioned breakfast to start the morning off right. I can’t tell you how long it’s been since I was able to do that, and it felt great to be out enjoying ourselves. Then John, Donovan and I joined John’s parents at the commencement exercises – and it was so good to have them celebrate with us! It made a wonderful day even better because we could share it with them! Upon sitting in the seat they saved for me, I opened the program and quickly turned the pages looking for Johnny’s name – and there it was – the black-and-white print confirming the happy news! It was really about to happen – he was really about to graduate after three long years. And when he crossed the stage to accept his diploma and be hooded by faculty of the school, I was so proud of him and his great accomplishment!
After we’d taken dozens of photos before, during and after the ceremony, we continued the celebration at Johnny’s favorite restaurant – Italian, of course. With family and friends surrounding us as we broke bread, shared stories, laughs, and the love that buoys and lifts us through any storm or on any sunny day, I again felt the enormity of the blessings that fill my life. I am blessed indeed. And yesterday, I was awed by how good it all was. So much to celebrate, and so many people whom I love deeply, to celebrate with.
We rounded out the day with another request of the graduate: to see the movie “Terminator Salvation.” And so we did. Well, the rest of the party saw the movie – I slept through a large chunk of it. But it was sweet sleep – knowing that another milestone had been experienced and celebrated. Another blessing on this journey has been given to me, and fully realized and appreciated.
Thank you, Lord, for your goodness. Thank you for a perfectly lovely day!

You should be proud of your son, Graduating is a big deal, my daughter has another year of college.
I’m so happy for you! My two little girls are very young right now, 4 and 1 but I’m excited to see what they will become. Good for you for being such a good mom. Kids are a reflection of their parents after all!!
